The Universal Service Fund (USF) is strengthening efforts to expand digital connectivity across Malawi as the Digital Malawi Acceleration Project (DMAP) moves closer to procuring service providers for the construction of over 90 communication towers nationwide.
During a stakeholder consultation meeting held in Blantyre, DMAP engaged mobile network operators, internet service providers, satellite companies, and other key industry players to discuss the project’s scope, procurement process, and implementation roadmap.
Supported by the World Bank, the project aims to improve access to reliable communication services in underserved and rural communities. A recent coverage gap assessment highlighted that Malawi requires more than 1,000 additional communication towers to address existing connectivity gaps.
Speaking during the engagement, MACRA Director General Daud Suleman reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to expanding digital access through the USF. He noted that while DMAP will support the rollout of 100 communication towers, MACRA will continue investing in additional infrastructure through the Fund to reach more communities across the country.
Through initiatives such as DMAP, the USF continues to advance Malawi’s digital transformation agenda by supporting the development of inclusive ICT infrastructure and ensuring more Malawians have access to reliable communication services.
