Malawi Participates in Smart Africa Regional Workshop on Bulk Purchase Marketplace Initiative
Malawi is taking part in a two-day regional workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, hosted by Smart Africa, focusing on accelerating digital connectivity across the continent.
The Malawian delegation includes Mr. Andrew Nyirenda, Director of Economic Regulations at the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), and Mr. Khumbo Kasambara, Projects Manager for the Universal Service Fund (USF). They join representatives from 10 Eastern and Southern African countries at this strategic gathering.
The workshop centers on the Bulk Purchase Marketplace (BPMP) — an initiative designed to enhance digital access in public institutions, particularly schools and health centers, by harnessing the collective purchasing power of Smart Africa member states. The platform aims to reduce costs and improve efficiencies in digital infrastructure deployment.
During the sessions, stakeholders shared experiences, challenges, and best practices to ensure the effective implementation of the BPMP. The Malawian delegation contributed valuable insights on how the Universal Service Fund can be leveraged to improve rural connectivity and bridge the digital divide.
Building on the momentum from a similar workshop held earlier this month in West Africa, this event further advances Smart Africa’s broader mission of fostering regional cooperation to drive inclusive digital transformation.
The Malawian team emphasized how the BPMP initiative can accelerate the digital transformation of public services. They also highlighted the critical role of cross-border collaboration and knowledge sharing in promoting sustainable development across Africa.
