The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority’s Universal Service Fund (USF), alongside the Malawi Computer Emergency Response Team (MwCERT), joined education planners and curriculum specialists in reviewing and strengthening Malawi’s national curriculum to support the country’s transition to the Competency-Based 1-6-6-3 education system.
As part of the review process, the USF team contributed technical expertise on digital inclusion and ICT development to ensure that the revised curriculum equips learners with the skills needed to participate in an increasingly digital economy.
The updated curriculum is expected to incorporate key digital competencies, including digital literacy, coding, cybersecurity awareness, cyber hygiene, and online safety. These additions aim to prepare learners with practical digital skills from an early age and promote responsible use of technology.
Speaking during the review, USF Officer Benard Banda said aligning the curriculum with Malawi’s digital transformation agenda is essential to developing a digitally skilled workforce. He noted that the revised curriculum complements MACRA’s mandate of promoting a safe, secure, and inclusive digital environment, while supporting initiatives such as the One Student, One Tablet programme.
Curriculum Specialist Joyce Chisale also underscored the importance of integrating digital competencies into classroom learning, noting that the inclusion of digital literacy and cybersecurity will better prepare learners to thrive in an increasingly connected world.
USF’s participation in the curriculum review reflects its continued commitment to advancing digital inclusion and supporting education initiatives that equip learners with the knowledge and skills required for Malawi’s digital future.
