Sign Language Development
The Sign Language Development program is a collaborative project between the Universal Service Fund (USF) and the Ministry of Education’s Inclusive Education Department aimed at promoting inclusivity and empowering the deaf community in Malawi. Through this initiative, 106 teachers across six education divisions have been trained in sign language and inclusive teaching practices, while 53 sign language clubs have been established in schools nationwide to foster continuous learning and awareness. To further encourage participation and elevate the profile of sign language in education, the initiative introduced a competitive framework that began with divisional contests and will result in a national championship, to showcase the top-performing clubs from each region. This project is a significant step toward creating more inclusive learning environments and supporting deaf learners in realizing their full potential.
